National Charity League Juniors
San Marino
In 1935, a small group of women interested in philanthropic work founded the “Charity League” in Los Angeles. These women worked together to make layettes and deliver baskets of food to the needy during the holidays; sometimes they brought their daughters with them. By 1938, so many daughters had become involved that they decided to form their own group, called “Ticktockers." In 1947, the two groups united to become the first mother-daughter charity under their present name, National Charity League. National Charity League was formally incorporated in 1958. The first “Chapter Day” was held in 1959 and the first NCL convention was organized the following year.
Our organization, NCL Juniors of San Marino, was formed in 1975 as an auxiliary group of the San Marino National Charity League. We operate under the guidance of our NCL Chapter and, similarly, engage in philanthropic activities. Unlike the Chapter, however, the NCL Juniors do not have a mother-daughter component. Historically, NCL Juniors of San Marino is a small group of women with an active membership of between 30 and 45 women. Our members come from San Marino and the surrounding communities.
For the past seventeen years, NCL Juniors of San Marino has devoted their philanthropic efforts to supporting the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) of the Huntington Hospital in Pasadena.
Each year we stage a fund-raising dinner with live and silent auctions. Through such efforts, over the last 30 years we have been able to contribute over 1.5 million to the programs of Huntington Hospital. This money has been used for many valuable and even life-saving purposes.
The efforts of NCL Juniors of San Marino funded the creation and maintenance of the Community Health Resource Center, a resource library at Huntington Hospital for patients and their families. Also, NCL Juniors funded the purchase of a state-of-the-art neonatal transport incubator, acquisition of oscillators and purchase of a completely new Neonatal Cardiac Monitoring System.
Since 2001, National Charity League Juniors of San Marino has contributed funds to purchase the following equipment for the Huntington Memorial Hospital’s Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care Units (NICU/PICU):
¨ Decumbant Diversion Equipment
(Entertainment Center for critically ill children in the PICU)
¨ One NICU Ventilator
¨ One NICU Transport Ventilator
¨ One PICU Transport Ventilator
¨ One PICU Telemetry Monitoring System
¨ One NICU Cardiac Monitor
¨ Two NICU Giraffe Incubators
In addition to raising money to fund acute care needs of the NICU, we are committed to providing additional services to the neonatal and pediatric intensive care patients and their families. We present baby shower gifts to NICU babies and PICU children.
